Ishiyama-dera (Stony mountain temple) is a Shingon temple in Ōtsu in Shiga Prefecture. Shown as the temple name, numbers of sub-temples, scenic stones and gardens are located over the mountain. This temple is known to be featured in numerous literary works written in Heian Period (794-1185). Allegedly, Murasaki Shikibu began writing The Tale of Genji at Ishiyama-dera during a full moon night in August 1004.

Hikone Castle is a Japanese Edo-period castle in the city of Hikone, in Shiga Prefecture. It was built between 1602 to 1622. Hikone is one of only 12 Japanese castles with the original keep, and one of only five castles listed as a national treasure.

Kinkaku-ji, officially named Rokuon-ji, is a Zen Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto, which is famous for the Golden Pavilion. The temple was the retirement villa of the shogun in the end of 14th century. It is one of the 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites.

Fushimi Inari-taisha is one of the most famous Shinto shrine in Japan, located in southern Kyoto. The main gate and the main shrine sit at the base of a mountain also named Inari (233 meters high). Behind them, in the middle of the mountain, the inner shrine is reachable by a path lined with thousands of torii.

Tō-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect in Kyoto founded in 796. The five-story pagoda stands 54.8 m high, and is the tallest wooden tower in Japan. And the oldest existing statues of esoteric Buddhism in Japan are enshrined in the main hall.

Sanjūsangen-dō is a Buddhist temple in Higashiyama District of Kyoto completed in 1164. The temple name literally means Hall with thirty three spaces between columns, describing the architecture of the long main hall of the temple. The main deity of the temple is the Thousand Armed Kannon.

Iga-ryu Ninja Museum. A ninja was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, assassination and guerrilla warfare. Ninja appeared in the 15th century during the Sengoku period, but antecedents may have existed in the 14th century, and possibly in the 12th century (Heian or early Kamakura era).

Nanzen-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto founded in 1291. The massive gate at the entrance is called San mon, which is one of the biggest temple gates in Japan. And the hōjō (abbot's quarters) of Nanzen-ji is notable both for its gardens and its art. The picture above shows “Suiro kaku” which is an aqueduct constructed in 1881-1890 to draw water from Lake Biwa to the city of Kyoto.

Kiyomizu-dera is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage site. The main hall has a large veranda, supported by tall pillars, that juts out over the hillside and offers impressive views of the city. The popular expression "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is the Japanese equivalent of the English expression "to take the plunge".
